Is there value in memberships?

I'm sure this may have been a topic so just point me there if need be.
Some friends recently became members of a RV organization that offers discount camping at various "RV parks". I believe it was CRA?,
it was a load of cash! I have read about others such as Passport America ect. and wondered what the opinion of other forum members were regarding the pros and cons of these memberships. My DW thinks it may be a good idea, I'm not so sure. I'm certainly not interested in specific time shares but something that offers reasonable discounts and nation wide availability might be ok. Thanks in advance for your opinions.
  • They're only of benefit it you really use them. If you find one that really seems to meet your needs, then look at buying it from a reseller (either an individual person or business) on the internet. You can save a lot of money, especially for the purpose of trying one out.

  • Our PassPort America membership has more than paid for itself in discounts. We use it primarily for stops in between our destinations (on our way from Point A to Point B) for example.

I've been interested in memberships like Coast to Coast and the like, but am wary of expensive "buy ins" and/or being stuck with yearly maintenance fees. (Someone on another website compared such memberships to STD's: Easy to get, painful while you have it and nearly impossible to get rid of).

I wish someone with vast knowledge and experience would write a primer on the subject.
