I think the road out of Cedaredge is probably an easier pull also. Even from Mesa to Powderhorn we find the road to be pretty steep, even though it doesn't seem like you're even close to the mesa edge yet. But, I will say that when we go, we always go through Mesa as it is more convenient for us from home.
Besides mosquito repellent, don't forget to pack a jacket or sweatshirt. It rarely gets above the mid-70's during the day in the middle of the summer and gets pretty cool in the evening.
