Key West or Out West

Well, I have been on here before dreaming about a trip out west. I got VERY good feedback.
Didn't imagine I'd be trying to do it right now with COVID restrictions but here we are.
We are a family of 5. Kids are 15, 13, and 10 and we are ready for an adventure before our oldest is gone.
We have the time and money to actually take a trip out in our 5th wheel to either key west or out west. I prefer out west but a lot of things are closed due to covid so I'm apprehensive about going.

I also HATE to book something a year out. I'd love to book it right now and be able to go mid may time frame.
Any suggestions on where I should look right now?
  • So do I need to pre book the trip? That’s really only thing west worries me about.
Other than that, I think we can burn 3 weeks but that’s about all the time we’ve got.
  • If you can pull it off, go west young man! Especially if you and the family have never been west of the Mississippi! We traveled from the Orlando area to suburban San Diego to pick up our first RV (private sale). Sadly we were time constrained with little time to see the sights. Nonetheless, a LOT of fun and memories. It really is about the journey.......
  • You can't go wrong with out west. So much to see and do. We did the big circle, northern route out and southern route back home. We did 12 weeks and 9000 miles and half was secondary roads. I'd like to do it again and do the things we didn't get to on the first trip. What I did was I went online and ordered the travel guides from all the states we were going through, yeah, it was a lot of paper but I find it easier to plan when I have something solid in front of me. They also contain many regional maps the o'l atlas can't provide.

I did little prebooking. I only booked where we were going to stay for at least 5 days and most of it was on the fly. We always found a place to stay. It looks like you would come down 81 to 40....a stop in the Pigeon Forge area? Nashville? When we went out west we turned north to go through St. Louis and over to Kansas City and then up to Iowa and into South Dakota and on to Rapid city. Follow the Lewis and Clark trail as much as you can. There are a few museums to check out on them.

Oh yeah, Key West isn't all that. The kids would like out west better.
  • We spent the summer wandering around the upper rocky mountain states with no problems, and plan to leave on a trip to the southern western states within the week so I'm not really sure what you think is closed down. Yes some national park visitor centers are closed, but not all and the parks are mostly open with the possible exception of Cali. Hard to say what's going on there tho the just loosened restrictions today. NM reportedly just loosened restrictions too. So there is plenty to do out there.

Key West is a day or two to see everything and also it is the peak of the snowbird season and you will find camps mostly full and extraordinarily expensive if you do find a spot. Wait until April for the Keys
