Large Family Campground

We have spent hours combing this site and others and are still coming up empty.

Looking for campground recommendations. We have a family of 8 so we are looking for a campground with the following:

1) Local to Midwest (WI, IL, IN, MO, MI)
2) LOTS of amenities to keep children occupied. (I have a wild bunch)
3) Looking more for a resort than a State Park.
4) Area attractions would be a nice bonus.

Anyone have a favorite out there?
  • KOA, Hayward, WI.
Worlds of Fun & Oceans of Fun in Kansas City.
River Bend RV Resort in Watertown WI.
Mark Twain Landing, Monroe City, MO.
List of Jellystone Parks with Water Slides:

  • Check out the Jellystone in Warrens. If you like outdoors type stuff, we were at Wisconsin Riverside Resort near Spring Green WI. right on the Wisconsin River. they do Canoe Livery for canoeing on the river. also the Woodruff/Minoqua area is really nice! lots of options!
  • I sure hate to let the cat outta the bag about my favorite CG in WI is Fort McCoy and is as good as it gets and it is open to everyone.
  • It has been almost 40 years ago, but I remember staying at Jellystone campground outside of St. Louis as a teen. Had my younger siblings with us as well. We all had a great time.
  • I suggest Indiana Beach, north of Monticello, Indiana. It is operated as a family resort camp and amusement park.

Another of this type is Camp Dearborn, near Holly, Michigan, though the emphasis there is more on cabin-like tent facilities, with the RV park as something off to the side. Also group camp and craft activities, rather than amusement park.

Attractions? I don't know what most people mean by that, usually everyone is looking for something different. Theme parks, theaters, natural wonders, outlet malls, water parks, museums, giant shopping malls? There is not much like any of this in Monticello, but Camp Dearborn is close enough to Detroit that you have 1 to 1 1/2 hour access to every attraction in the Detroit area, number one of which would be Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum. But no Six Flags.

I like the Hannibal, Missouri area, with Mark Twain Cave being a nice campground. However, the park itself does not offer much in the way of activities, and Hannibal, as an attraction, does not have that much in the way of "keep me amused" for your age group.
  • Indian Trails campground in Pardeeville, Wi. has tons of activities for the kiddos! Took us about 2.5 hours from the Fox Valley area (if that's what Batavia your from.)
