Basecamp in Las Vegas area and take a day drive to the Dam. RV parking is VERY limited, as a matter of fact all parking is limited. So take the car or take a tour. Then straight down to the I-40 near Kingman. There is really not much to see on the way down, unless your really into desert, then it is a great place to 4 wheel or hike. At the South side of the Grand Canyon I really recommend basecamping in William. It is a 60 mile one hour drive up to the South Rim, but Williams has some lovely campgrounds, and by far better restaurants. We have stayed more than a few times at Circle of Pines KOA, and I highly recommend that park. Lots of trees, large sites, indoor heated pool, just a really nice stop. There are many other parks in Williams as well. Don't miss a visit to BearAzona. It is a drive through wild animal park, and it is totally fascinating for the entire family, us old guys include. For young children the DeerPark is also a fun visit.
Enjoy the trip, and Happy Trails.
