Theres a huge difference. Chain hotel franchises do indeed adhere to very strict brand details. Each one is generally not owned by an individual but rather a group of investors forming their own franchise investment corporation with millions into it. KOA's are generally owned by private individuals. Vastly different concept. Some KOA's are very nice, some aren't. Closest to a hotel chain would be Best Western. Some of them are 1 star dumps, others are 4 star resorts. Many BW's are independently owned rather than an investment group. Yet people tend to rate each BW individually and not lump them together as one.
