I can't speak for the low temps in Alberta but here in southern Ontario it gets down to -20C some days. Our septic system is 40 years old and I had it inspected (concrete tank and a scoping of the tile field) a couple of years ago, no problems in spite of leaving it unused over the winter for the past 8 years.
Our daughter lives in northern Ontario where they get temps similar to Alberta, again no problems (they have a plastic tank). Their place was left unattended over a number of winters also.
If the septic system was built taking into account the northern climate it should be ok, especially if it's being used. I've seen problems with water piping freezing up in our area due to not having been properly installed, again an installation issue, not taking into consideration the climate.
