Desertmax, you are so right -- the forest service maps do not precisely indicate things like private property "inholdings." (The property owners usually post the land, but not always.) The topo software is also pretty sketchy.
I have found that the most reliable source of info would be the rangers themselves -- visit the local office, buy one or two forest service maps (always a good icebreaker!!), and get to chatting with the ranger about good places to boondock. They can be surprisingly helpful.
