Huh. I have never had trouble figuring out where I was on FS or BLM land, and only once in my life been rousted. That was in a place with sign that said 'no camping', but I took a chance because it was so remote ;)
I do agree that the modern thing where some places are NOT camp-able is kind of confusing
I grew up reading maps, so I am pretty down with, 'Ok, one hairpin turn, then a long curve, then cross a tiny creek, and then we are on public land.'
