We always stay at Stonebridge and really like it. Joe b. mentioned Waynesville, a few miles east of Maggie Valley. The Mast General Store there is worth a visit as is Nick & Nate's Pizza.
South of Waynesville heading toward Brevard, you will be in Transylvania County, which is the home of lots of beautiful waterfalls. There's another pretty waterfall between MV and Cherokee (Soco Falls). And you can get on the Blue Ridge Parkway just west of MV.
If you like BBQ, there is a place within walking distance of the Stonebridge RV Park.
We like Maggie Valley because it's close to everything, but not "busy" like Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge.
