curious, what do you do to get your mail forwarded when you plan to be bouncing around for 2 or 3 months? we have no kids or neighbors to collect from the mailbox and forward. thanx

Put it on hold. Nothing important comes in the mail anymore (for us).

Same for us. We've done everything online for several years now, banking, taxes etc...; really no need for mail over 3-4 months time span.

I have never checked but according to my mother and her husband who live in Phoenix, the post office will only hold the mail for thirty days.

My experience is that post office forwarding is extremely unreliable.

As my carrier explained it to me, when you fill out the forwarding form a note is sent to the carrier. They may not read it. Or there me be a sub one day, who has no idea of the form you filled out months earlier. Or two carriers may share your route and only one of them gets the note.
  • We have very little actual mail, and live in a small town, so the post office will just hold it for us up to a month. More than that, the postmaster has to give permission. I go in, he says where are you going this time, and how long? and OKs it. If we are going to be gone for long, I also have a good friend that will go by the post office and pick it up for us. That way, if anything looks important, she will call.

  • Most private mail box people will foward mail. Have important mail go to your private mail box. They usually require a postage account. Have forwarded mail sent out "priority if it fits it ships". Many drug stores will send any meds to your private mail box. Better than trying to have meds sent to different addresses each time.
