Maine campgrounds

Will be going to Maine the last of August and returning around September 20. We will be starting from Roanoke, Va.

Will enter Maine at Kittery. We want yo see the coast and as much of the leaves as possible. Will probably go to Acadia national park as well. I have a JAYCO fifth wheel with 4 slides.

Can anyone recommend a campground that is suitable for this size rig. Prefer full hookups.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Never been to Maine.
  • Thanks for all the replays. A special thanks to egregg57 for his suggestions.

We are currently at Riverside rv park in Sevierville, Tn. Next door to the GSMNP. Very nice park.

I plan on making my reservations while here. That is if I can still get one. Again, thanks for everyone's help.

    Enjoy the Holiday.
  • I suggest you get in touch with egregg57........He knows Maine !
  • We live in NH and frequent many campgrounds in the general area. The campground in Acadia you want is Smugglers Den in Southwest harbor. Many sites have a good amount of room between them. You have a choice of cement pad pull through, and back in gravel sites. Trolley service to everything in the area runs through the campground every 30 minutes.

I have hosted and attended rallies in Acadia on 5 occasions. Our sixth will be in August 2018.

Others have already said it, you need to be in New England late september early October to catch the fall colors.

I will be happy to share links to campgrounds we have stayed at and found to be good in Maine that are as far south as Berwick and as far north as Rangely and Bar Harbor. I would also suggest checking Campgroundreport.com for unbiased reviews of any recommendations.

I can tailor the links to cost as well. We do a lot of resort places, but small mom and pop places and KOA's.

    Short List:
    Flat Rock Bridge
Gray Family Homestead Campground (Driving challenges getting to this but its beautiful)
    Wassamki Springs
    Desert Of Maine
    Freeport Durham KOA
    Bass Harbor Campground
    Point Sebago Resort
    Bayleys Camping Resort
    Powder Horn Campground
    Wild Acres Resort
    Narrows and Narrows Too Campgrounds
    Bar Harbor KOA(s)

    These are a few.

+1 for Shore Hills. Booth Bay Harbor is great. Be sure to eat at Robinson's Wharf in E. Booth Bay.
  • You'll very likely be too early to see much in the way of fall colors; they usually peak around the first or second week of October. Columbus Day is generally considered the peak leaf peeping time in Vermont, whether or not the trees always cooperate. Maine would likely be a very little bit earlier than Vermont on average. You will, of course, see plenty of leaves in their everyday green garb.

Reservations (made as soon as possible) are very strongly urged for Labor Day weekend.
  • You will be too early for any leaf peeping. Even the extreme north doesn't usually start turning until the end of September. There are multiple choices for Acadia but our favorite is the Bar Harbor KOA Oceanside. Very pricey but you can't beat the sunsets. You can rent kayaks there, they do lobster dinners right on-site and the pie lady drives through on a daily basis.

Their guide has a wealth of information. You can order a paper copy or I believe download it.
