Malhuer NF Dispersed ???

Heading down to Steens aboot the 2nd week of July, looking for any info or ideas (other than just roaming in an unfamiliar forest!!) for dispersed sites somewhat near 395??? If anything, I know we can stay in a NF campground, of which there a few near the highway but really prefer a "true boondocking" site!!!

Thanks in advance for any and all info!!!

  • There's a super BLM site at Frenchglen...foot of the Steens.

  • That's where we are heading to, Gary!! Looking for a 1 or 2 night stop heading down there. Not planning on driving all the way from home in one day!!!
  • There's some dispersed camping off the gravel road that makes the Steen's Loop. I would guess about 5-8 miles from Page Springs CG. It would be a gamble as there's not that many spots to choose from. We stayed at Page Springs CG last year. While not really true dispersed camping, the spots are well spaced and it was a really quiet setting.
  • Thanks for replies!! I am actually looking for some info on sites or spots in the NF before we get down to Burns. Familiar with a lot of Umatilla NF, but not so much with Malhuer!!
  • Too bad the MVUM is not finalized for the Malhuer National Forest as these maps usually have good dispersed camping info. In conjunction with the Google Maps satellite layer one can find many promising spots.
  • Are we discussing Malheur National Forest or Malheur National Wildlife Refuge?

Two different entities and not close to each other.
