This winter Mt Rainier NP proudly stayed open seven days a week, even in the face of tightening budgets. And on their website hours operation you could see it: open seven days a week.
What they failed to tell anyone was that every Tuesday and Wednesday all the roads would be closed, in order to save money on plowing costs. The park was still open just like they said, you just couldn't drive into it. That information was buried under "road conditions".
Good luck trying to explain to them that if none of the roads were open, the park wasn't open, and you should tell people that ahead of time.
My point is that our expectations of government stewardship are way too high. Lands in the public trust can still be protected and utilized, but we're all going to have to bring a little patience when dealing with the people who manage them.
