- Bob___AnnExplorerWe like Tom Sawyer in West Memphis. It is right on the Mississippi River. Watching the barges go by is nice plus it is clean and safe. One draw back is that it closes when the river is close to flood stage. They keep you posted on their web site. It only takes a few minutes to get to Memphis and there are no tolls. Enjoy
- Hiking_HunterExplorerDon't know where the cook off is, but there are three COE parks South of Memphis that we like. Of the three, Hernando Point would probably be the best. They do not have full hook ups, but is a nice CG. But, it's still around 30 miles from the center of town. Here are a few closer to downtown; not a lot to pick from.
Memphis CGs
On edit - looks like Tom Sawyer is a better pick - didn't know about that one. - tnscoutrExplorerAnother vote for Tom Sawyer.
- KID2TEXASExplorerTom Sawyers is nice but the two Elvis places are not in best areas, the agra center is like a field but close to lots of food and fun but you can look it up.
Tom Sawyers would be the easiest to get back and forth over the river. Check out their site.
have fun. - dinwiddiExplorerAnother vote for Tom sawyer
- BobboExplorer III live in Memphis. If I were to camp here, I would stay at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park. Tom Sawyer is a distant second choice. The Agricenter campground is far behind Tom Sawyer. Definitely do NOT stay at the Graceland campground.
A neighbor who owns an RV camps almost exclusively at Shelby Forest (that is what the locals call it). I never understood camping 30 minutes from home. - Dick_AExplorerMoved from General RV'ing forum.
- TxTwoSomeExplorerWe camped at the Shelby State park last May it was a very nice campground we enjoyed it.
It is located in Millington which is north of Memphis. Not sure where the BBQ cook off is. But if towards the north side I would recommend Shelby. - KID2TEXASExplorerMemphis in May is at Tom Lee Park right on the Mississippi just off Beal St close to downtown, Shelby Forest is a long drive that's why Tom Sawyers is the closest, it is on the river in Arkansas. There is also Southaven RV park just down the road in Mississippi. just do a search of the area but listen to what the local folks have to say that closer does not mean safer.
- FordDiesel250ExplorerJust some information about the cook off. If you go on Thursday when it opens between 11:00am and 1:00pm they will let you in free. Do not expect to sample the BBQ unless you sign up to be a judge and pay a fee to go thru their judging school where you will be trained and certified. DW and I spent an enjoyable time at the cool off a couple of years back and what I saw on tv and what one could bring in is totally different. No coolers, no sampling BBQ unless you go to judge school and then you only get to judge 3 samples.
