MH or TT

I know that any RV can be used for boondocking; be it public lands, wally world, truck stops, etc. But which do most prefer, the MH or TT? My only experience has been with my old Class C and I'm thinking about my next purchase.
Thanks for everyone's input.

    Isn't all hiking DIY? :B

I like a motorhome for traveling, everything is accessible while on the road. Especially when you're sitting in a several hour traffic backup.

If you're staying at a location for long periods, I think a TT is a better choice.

Good thought on the hybrid. Limit for GC towing is 3500# so in the past I've looked at the likes of R-pods, A-liners, T@B, etc. I'm OK with a small TT or hybrid, as long as it is usable with the bunks in. Would probably like an egg but hard to pull the trigger without visiting a few. I'm see some old Bolers in places I didn't think a goat could get to.
  • There's no right or wrong answer. We've had 3 pop-ups, 1 hybrid trailer pulled behind a van, a small 5th wheel towed with a half-ton truck and now a 50 ft. Class C towing a small car. Overall I think the MH has lots of advantages. On board generator, and easier to back into a site. I like having the little Chevy Sonic to drive around (ave. 30 MPG) instead of the truck(ave 14 MPG) which was all we had.

With a TT, or with a TC, you will certainly get more ground clearance, which is the only thing that keeps us from serious boondocking in our class C, just not wanting to leave low hanging parts, (dump tubes, exhaust pipe, generator exhaust, steps, etc all laying on some back dirt road. :(

I agree with gbopp, if staying the night at a Walmart, truck stop, etc like the motorhome, you can leave in a hurry if need be. If I'm staying longer like my 5th wheel. Each has advantages and disadvantages.
  • If you have a Jeep then definitely a motor home to tow it is the best choice. It will give you lots of enjoyment on the backroads.
  • MH for us. Travel time is more enjoyable, set up is easier, and tear down is faster. Truck and TT or FW is nice but with the MH I am not limited to just the truck. Depending on the destination I can hook up the jeep, or the truck and rzr, or the enclosed trailer, or just take the MH.
  • I originally bought a Class C when my children were small. Safety and accessibility during travelling were priorities and pretty much excluded anything but a MH - having to get everyone from the car to a TT in a dark parking lot and back to the car when we were ready to leave was NOT something I wanted to deal with. Not to mention having to stop every time someone needed to use the bathroom. The MH was perfect, they had a table to write or play games on, the bathroom was there to use, one parent could even make sandwiches for lunch while the other drove. When we pulled over to sleep, no need to get out of the MH and risk someone jumping out of the shadows. Even when in a park, if something happened and we needed to get out of there FAST, all I had to do was start it and drive. Electric cords and water hoses are replaceable, my children aren't. We didn't even take a toad, I never found using the MH (25' class C) around town a problem. It was also great for family drives, lots of windows and we could all ride together without being crammed. And there were SO many times when having everything accessible was priceless. When the freeway closed during a blizzard, we parked behind a gas station for a couple of days and were comfortable. The hotels were all full but what did we care? Driving home on that same trip, I-40 was closed for hours and we just sat there. I sent DH to the neighboring cars, offering the use of our bathroom, and several people were delighted to take us up on the offer.

As others have said, there is no right or wrong choice. But the MH is definitely my choice.

Now, the kids are grown, it's just my husband and me travelling, and I still find a MH suits my needs perfectly. If my back acts up on a long drive (as it usually does), DH can take over driving and I can lie down in a real bed. Fresh drinks, cold (or hot) snacks, a table to set up a laptop for the non-driving partner, of course the bathroom - all readily available.
  • Yep, no right answer aside from what your wallet can handle.

We've done the full gamut - started out with popup and a Jeep, moved to a hybrid, TT, FW, and now a MH.

The older we get, the more we appreciate the MH, but once the kids are all gone, I'd probably go back to a FW given a choice.
