Pictured rocks in Munising. Viewed either by a boat tour or kayak. Porcupine mountains for hiking and daily ranger sessions. Book state park campsites early to get a site on Lake superior. While there, visit Adventure Mine in Greenland. It's an amazing cooper mine tour. White fish point lighthouse, museum, keepers quarters and beach.Go to Soo locks and time your visit with a freighter passing through. Tahquamenan Falls, both sets of falls are nice but the upper falls are the biggest. I've been in the UP in July and it's been 32 degrees at night. Bring warm clothes just in case!

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore - take a cruise by boat during the evening hours as the setting sun gives some spectacular colors. If you do any hiking in this area take the most potent bug repellant you can find. Whitefish Point/Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum - yes. Suggest also Tahquamenon Falls, accessible by car (north bank) in the state park or by 2 ft. gauge railroad and riverboat (pick up the Toonerville Trolley at Soo Junction). Mackinac Island (we took our own bikes) also Mackinac Bridge.Campgrounds - at Mackinac we used the KOA at St. Ignace. It was OK but there are better choices in the area. There is a KOA outside of Newberry we used when taking the train/boat to Tahquamenon Falls. They provided a free breakfast, cooked to order. For Pictured Rocks we used Wandering Wheels two miles outside of Munising. Many here use the Munising Tourist Park right in town. Do find a place to dine on an authentic UP pastie (pronounced PASS-tee). Enjoy & safe travels.

Kitchi Ti Kippi is a must see! (Google it :) )And you definitely need to eat a pasty - spelled with a "y". Make sure it has red onions and rutabagas in it. If you are looking for a pastie, that is a VERY different thing and you'd have to look in a very different place!

While in the area, Fayette SP has some historic buildings and artifacts from the 1800s.Farther west, I think Bond Falls near Paulding is one of the prettiest waterfalls around. I have been there several times. The Porcupine Mountains SP is north of there; the east unit has the high overlook of Lake of the Clouds and the west unit offers a pleasant walk along a river with 3 small waterfalls as well as a short walk to Lake Superior. The west unit's CG is more rustic than the east. Another good place to camp is the municipal CG in Ontonagon.For Pictured Rocks, try to hit the sunset cruise on a calm, sunny day for best light on the rocks.In Mackinaw City, you have a lighthouse in town and 2 more west of town. Be sure to stop at the local bakery for some great cinnamon bread or pecan rolls.There are some nice bits of lake view around Munising as well as on US-2 between Engadine and St. Ignace. You'll see places along the latter highway offering smoked fish for sale, and it can be quite good.The pasty is similar to a pot pie. You can get it with gravy or with ketchup; I recommend gravy.

Do a Google search for `_______ tourism' and put the State, city, or area in the blank space and read what the specialists recommend and/or search this Forum for `upper peninsula' or `Michigan' and search the results for `upper'.

Yes, if you pronounce it Paste-ee instead of Past-ee, you may get something completely different (and perhaps get a slapped face too!)

Nah. They're used to tourists who can't pronounce pasty. Or Mackinac. Or Sault Ste Marie.

True. But Mackinaw, or Salt Ste Marie don't have another meaning.

Drummond Island on the extreme eastern edge is fun. There is a mile long ferry. It takes semis and campers. It is quite remote. It is fun to rent quads and ride the Maxon Plains. Or just drive around as much as the paved roads allow. There are campgrounds. I second the vote for Engineer Day with the michigan National Guard up in the Soo. You can camp right on the St. Mary's River and watch the big ships go by.
