Michigan's Lake Michigan Coast parks

What are the better state parks along Michigan's Lake Michigan's coast to stay at, visit and/or see. Leaving from St Louis in early Sept, toward Sault Ste Marie and planning on spending several days in doing so. Would like to make two stays of a couple of days each before heading for the next stop. If a particular stop is very interesting or unique, a day or two can easily be added.
Oh yeah, B campers and only require electric, flush facilities with showers preferred.

  • Then there's Ludington State Park which is very nice too however, it's an older park setup but has good electric and bath houses and showers has lots to do. Grand Haven State Park and Holland State Park are the most popular state parks in the entire state and Ludington isn't too far behind. Going to anyone of them will tell you why they are.
  • OP, what kind of RV'ers/campers are you? Do you like to just sit in your RV or at your site, hike or walk/drive around and see what the an area has to offer? That will make a big difference in suggestions for you. Do you like to bike or visit museums or interesting unique stores? Michigan State Park CG's (100+ 0f them) all have electric except for the very remote ones and nearly all have very nice modern clean showers and bathrooms. All have handicapped access as do the campsites. No extra charge for showers like some states do so you can shower as long as you want to.

For instance, the very popular Grand Haven State Park & CG (very close to our home) is right on the Lake Michigan beach and has 174 paved sites and a state of the art bathhouse with private door showers all around the exterior of the building and is only a couple years old. A mile long true wide boardwalk to downtown along the wide deep Grand River with ships coming and going and gobs of pleasure boats and lots of nice benches with backs and bathrooms all along it. so much to do and see in the area and very upbeat and clean.

5 miles north of GHSP is the nearly 1200 acre PJ Hoffmaster SP with 300 sites in a very wooded setting with a short walk on he path between the sand dunes to a 2-1/2 mile long pristine pure sand beach. 3 very modern bathhouses and lots of trails to hike. The campground is not right on the lakeshore beach but behind the big sandunes with trails to the beach or a 3 minute drive to the day use beach parking area. No view of the lake and beach right from your RV site as it's in forest area approx. 1-2 blocks from the lake and beach.

    Help us to help you.

It will be nearly impossible to get a reservation in a state park in that area for September. Those are booked 6 months ahead of time. You will have to go further north, like petoskey, or away from the lake shoreline. Or Platte river which is a national park.

Um.... After Labor Day you only need worry about weekends really. So there is a chance.

  • Definitely Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It's in the most beautiful area of Michigan. Platte River campground is the place and reservations are highly recommended. It's very popular.... and for a reason.
