Mid Atlantic Coast

Hi there, looking for suggestions for a trip during the last week of April for our 31st anniversary. We will be leaving from NY, but due to parent's health issues, do not want to travel as far as Myrtle Beach. We usually try to incoporate a country concert or event and work our plans accordingly. For instance last year our first stop was at a casino in PA for an Alan Jackson concert, then on to Amish country in Lancaster Pa, and last stop was on the ocean in Delaware. Have been searching for events in the Virginia area and along it's coast, but have not come across anything as of yet. Also, we're trying to avoid the long bridges and tunnels in the Chesapeake Bay area. This site has been extremely helpful in the past, so hoping someone may have some suggestions. Looking forward to your input.
  • Once in Delaware you will have to cross a bridge unless you travel back up to MD/DE line to cross a small brige
  • Thank you all, so far some great suggestions; some of which we have been to, but certainly wouldn't mind returning. The Outer Banks and Charleston were a couple of my first choices, just have to see how long of a ride they are and how much time we can be away.
  • Something unusual that week?? 28 and 29 april
Newport News Va, the siege at Yorktown is detailed out of Endview plantation. www.endview.org
    or
Plymouth NC has a civil war re-enactment both days

  • You said the coast so: Chincoteague, Virginia is a neat little town with several campgrounds. You can ride your bikes around town. You are right there at the southern end of Assategue Island and the Wildlife refuge with paved bike trails and a swimming beach.. They have some nice restaurants, 2 ice cream parlors,a neat old movie theater. You are near Wallops Island which has a visitor center with exhibits on the space program.
  • As was previouslly mentioned , Williamsburg and Jamestown, Newport News park is run by the city of Newport News Va, a fantastic campground with much to do in the area. Williamsburg is 25 minutes west, Virginia Beach is about 45 Minutes east. And then take US 17 North through Gloucester and up to Annapolis, and cross the bay, to Assateague Island on the VA/Md line. A Maryland state park there will let you camp near the beach in the midst of the wild horses.
  • I grew up in Maryland. I really like the Gettysburg, PA Battlefield and Williamsburg and Jamestown, VA for places to visit. You can spend as long as you want around Washington DC. The Bay is a great place to visit but best seen by boat.

Many people enjoy visiting the Carolinas. I like the beach and Outer Banks and Charleston.

In 1968 I spent every weekend in Ocean City chasing girls and surfing. It was so much fun, I finished college and moved to California in a VW bus. I would not even recognize OC now with all of the high rise buildings.
