Moab, Canyonlands & Arches

We are going to be spending 4 days in May in the Moab area during our trip west and would like to get some campground suggestions from those with experience there. We could stay in Arches National Park but the campground is way north and we would prefer to have the more central location in Moab. There seem to be 8-10 choices around Moab but we would like to get some opinions.
  • We stayed at Archview last time, and were quite happy, Dead Horse Point State Park would also certainly work.

The commercial "in town" parks looked too "in town" for me, and the KOA is well south of town, while the parks are all north
  • We stayed at Portal RV in the private section which is available for people off the street if spaces are available. We went in June and many were available.
  • Four day seem very short. Arches is very large park. I think about 18 mile drive to the campground from entrance. While in Moab area check out Dead Horse SP, Gobblin SP and don't forget Capital Reef NP with Fruita Campground. Very nice parks with interesting views.
  • the most impressive arch with beautiful landscape past it in the distance was Mesa Arch in the Canyonlands.
    bumpy
  • It would help if we knew what kind of RV and how big and if a motor home are you towing a toad. I looked at your profile and you don't list any RV info. Dick
  • If you want to get a little away from the highway and "downtown" Moab, try Pack Creek CG.
  • X2 on OK Rv Park. What we liked about it is that it is off the highway and doesn't have a lot of road noise. It's a bit out of town, but very nice.

Shhhh don't tell anyone about Dead Horse State Park.

Now you are talking about one of our most favourite places. If nothing else go there for the stars at night.
  • If we were you, we'd stay in Arches N.P. or at Dead Horse Point State Park. To us, the surrounding beauty cancels out being way far north or way far west. One afternoon wwould suffice for exploring the small town of Moab. There's not much to do in the town itself. It's the surrounding areas that are the draw to Moab - and 4-wheeling! Plan on putting on some miles when visiting the Moab area.
  • We stayed at Portal for 5 days in August. We were in the "private" section, as well. It was very nice but pricey. Because it was August, we wanted to have access to a pool. We used it as our base in Moab to visit Arches and Canyonlands. We also visited the Castle Creek Winery. They have a John Wayne Museum in the Lodge adjacent to the winery.

Portal does have some regulations to stay in that section of the Park---age of unit as well as type of RV.
