If they plan to do any day hikes, staying on the west side is not a good idea. It takes probably 2 hours just to get over the top on Trail Ridge Road and get to an east side trailhead. Anyone who hikes RMNP and doesn't get to the Glacier Gorge area (trailhead on Bear Lake road) has really missed one of the most beautiful areas in the Rockies.
