    There is a lot of free areas nearby, but the monument itself it on a Indian reservation, as such they control the land. I would stay at the Indian run campground, it is not that expensive, and the closest place to the Monument, except for the hotel built on the mesa just west of the "Mittens".

    I stayed at a free place near Hite Marina, and then stopped at Monument Valley, then went on to Albuquerque. You can check for BLM sites nearby.
