Luray Caverns is a good cave to visit and if you like antiques, galleries, etc. check out Edinburg just up the road a few miles and Woodstock which has lots of great restaurants and live entertainment. If you are into wine, there are many good wineries in the Mt. Jackson area. As for nature and picnics, you will be in and out of the George Washington National Forest so there are all kinds of picnic areas. Just remember there are not many passes running West-East across the moumtain so check maps before you venture out as it may be quite a drive to get from point A to point B.
