Moving from OKC to Seattle

Hi everyone! My husband is active duty Coast Guard and we have been told that we will be moving to Seattle next summer. We will be keeping our home in OKC and will live in our Class A for 4 years in Seattle.

My question is: What route would you suggest for us to take from OKC to Seattle and what would you suggest we see and do along the way?

We will be traveling in July 2014. We have lived in San Francisco but that is as far north as we have gone in the NW. We have been to Mt. Rushmore in SD and that is as far north as we have been in the central US.

We are open to any ideas because we have no idea where anything is in the NW or what are the "must see and do" places are.

Please HELP!!

Thank you!
  • Be prepared for sticker shock. This web site will give you reviews for parks around SeaTac area.Clicky
Also be aware that no matter what his commute times are going to be at least a hour most days, and much longer than that the rest of the time. Seattle traffic is about the worst on the west coast, IMHO even much worse than LA traffic. I have spent up to four hours trying to get through Seattle area on more than one occasion.
  • Hey Coastiefamily!

There might be resources connected to the Guard to help finding space etc....are you familiar with Coastie Chicks?

I heard about it from my inlaws. (Hubby's Dad was retired from the Coast Guard)

HAHA! Thanks Francesca! I just didn't know how else to describe that we had not been any farther north than that!

He will be at the CG Base that is located at Pier 36 in Seattle.

    :B WHEW!

That's good news that Hubby's at the waterfront station,too- opens up a bunch of possibilities on the other side of the Sound. A half hour ferry commute is all he'd have to do if y'all lived in Bremerton or Winslow. He wouldn't have to even bring a vehicle, just walk from the ferry terminal.

He'd probably actually be closer to work that way- few if any RV parks near downtown on the Seattle side..

Welcome to the Northwest from a retired AF MSgt. Sound advice above. You will not find a long term area near the pier. A ferry commute would put you in some good areas. If you stay on the east side of the sound he's going to have a commute of an hour or more.

The time of year you are coming up is prime for a drive up the Oregon coast. Try to firm up your plans soon so you can make reservations.

  • Thanks for your service. That goes for the both of you having had my wife with me for the last two years of my tour in earlier years.
You will love the NW and I'm sure you are looking forward to a whole new life experience. Quite a change from OKC.
  • I suggest that you take I-40 into NM and head north on US285 to Santa Fe.
Then US84 to Pagosa Springs and head west to Durango.
Take the Million Dollar Highway N to Ridgway, then turn west on hwy 62.
The mountains are spectacular along this route.
If you like this scenery and want a bit more, circle down into Telluride.
Then head NW on hwy 145, then hwy 90, into Utah (becomes hwy 46).
    Enjoy Canyonlands and Arches.
Take I-70 west to Hwy 28 N until you join up with I-15 N.
Head north to the Tetons & Yellowstone.
Then loop back S a bit to pick up I-84 and head into Oregon.
Consider a detour to Wallowa Lake State Park and maybe Hell's Canyon.
    Enjoy the Columbia River gorge.
If you have time, sidetrack down the Oregon coast a ways before heading to your new home in Washington.
  • I have a relative who owns a property management company in Bremerton. Don't know if she knows anything about long-term RV parks, but I'll ask.
The Little Big Horn Battlefield site is in SE Montana, and is on your route. There is an RV park within sight of the battlefield - 7th Ranch RV park.

  • Wow! Thank you so much! I appreciate the route help and the info about the ferry. I am not used to ferries so I never really gave it much consideration.

Can any of you recommend a RV park that would be a good option?

Can't make any specific recommendations there, but:

Across-the-Sound Bremerton's a big Navy town, and there are resources for military families that are relocating there. In case the service is extended to Coasties, too, here's a link to the Navy's website for that location.
