We like Big Pine Campground in Custer or Bluebell in the park...if you can get in.
The Black Hills is a surprisingly small overall area jam packed with things to do. You can pretty much get anywhere in about an hour or so. Depending upon how many days you have, go hit the badlands or even Devils Tower. Each is two thirds of a day trip. There is also wind cave. You HAVE to go through the wildlife loop and take some of the dirt roads within. And musts are Iron Mountain Rd. and Needles highway. The Alpine Inn German Restaurant in Hill City is really good. The wineries are fun. Of course if this is your first time, you will feel obliged to see Rushmore and Crazy Horse so there goes a day. A drive down Spearfish Canyon is fun, stop at the Lodge sit by the creek with a glass of wine. You can bring the dogs. We have land for retirement in the area. As you can see, we love it and go every year once or twice.
