Just got back from there a month ago. Spent 8 days in SD, and it wasn't enough time. Crazy Horse is somewhat overrated in my opinion for what they want to charge for the admission price...but of course everyone has a different opinion.
Badlands is worth the drive, but it will be a full day trip just to get the full experience. We didn't have a chance to stop, but North of the Badlands, there is a military base with some old minute man silos that you can tour.
Deadwood had a lot of bars and casinos...cool if you're into that kinda thing.
Hiking around Sylvan lake is good for a morning excursion.
If you're taking children, plan on a day at Evans Plunge in Hot Springs.
I found the DakotaMart in Custer to have very reasonable prices for groceries. I was somewhat expecting to get gouged by shopping there, but they weren't out of line with the prices I'm use to paying, so no need to pack a lot of food and haul it with you.
We stayed at Sylvan Lake South campground (Site 12E) and I think that it was the best spot there. It is the smallest of the Custer SP's but based on our likes, it was by far the best in our opinion. We drove thru several of them and agreed that it was the best. They have electric at the sites and a bathroom/shower facility on site which was pretty clean.
One of the best things was that our camp host told us that we were free to pick up firewood from the side of the road. You will see areas where that have moved a lot of cut wood into piles, ans he said we could have as much as we wanted, so if you have space, bring a chainsaw or something. I don't know if they will let you do that it all the parks though. He said that they use to burn the piles in the winter when there was a significant snowfall, but lately, not as much snow so they're letting people burn it themselves.
The drive is pleasant...but long!! We made it to Kearney NE the first night. But the next days drive from Kearney to Custer was NEVER ENDING. Since you're starting about 4 hours south from us (Ft Worth), I feel your pain.
Be mindful of when you make your reservations because I'm sure things get crazy in the area during bikeweek in Sturgis which is Aug 7-13, 2017. then sometime in late September, Custer has an annual buffalo roundup that draws thousands of people.
To sum it all up, we were there 8 days, and didn't see it all.
