I couldn't imagine going to the Black Hills without doing at least one of the caves, Wind or Jewel. But you must get to either one early to get a tour spot. In late June, we got to Jewel Cave around noon, and the best we could do was get a ticket for the four o'clock tour.
X2. We drove all the way to Jewel Cave only to find out that all the tours had been reserved for the day. Luckily, they have a pretty nice & informative visitors center.
