Since a couple of others suggested things to do in my neighborhood (downtown DC), I will suggest New Hampshire
Where to stay: Saco River Camping Area in North Conway offers lots of "stuff" to do. Hiking, biking, fishing tubing and kayaking (river runs right thru the CG) Outlet stores, railroading. etc.
Things to do:
Ride the Conway Scenic Railway
Drive to the top of Mt. Washington, or take the Cog Railroad (pricey)
Take a hike in the Flume Gorge in Franconia.
Tons of "stuff" to do in the White Mountains
