Since you mentioned that your son LOVES military forts, take him to see Fort Adams in Newport, Rhode Island
A very nice campground is Fisherman's Memorial in Narragansett. You can ride your bikes about a mile or so down to the harbor at Point Judith and catch a ferry out to Block Island and go out to the lighthouse.
You can take a ride up to Providence and see Water Fire
The nice thing about RI, it has al ot of interesting things and is so small that no matter where you stay, you are less than a hour or so away from it.
