Myrtle Beach bans tents & umbellas

FYI

I just read that Myrtle Beach has followed North Myrtle Beach in banning tents on the beach, but took it a step further and apparently has banned the use of umbrellas also.

I am not sure how that affects the campgrounds as most are in Horry County and not within the city limits of either MB or NMB, but it may follow suit.

Here is a link to the article from one of the MB area TV stations.

Myrtle Beach bans tents
  • I personally don't mind the tent ban. We have never used one but do use umbrellas. To my knowledge you always had to be along or behind the "lifeguard line" to use them.

I know Myrtle Beach Travel Park (where we stay) and Apache are outside the city limits. I am not sure about the big three on the south end.

We've been living the 'tent ban discussion in MB since last fall. Essentially they want the ezee up type of shelters banned along with the beach tents. Regular beach umbrellas will still be ok providing they are behind the lifeguard view line.

For folks like ourselves who spend a lot of time on the beach, I welcome the shelter ban. There would sometimes be 2 and 3 shelters 10x10 put up side by side and only 4-5 people under them. It would take up a lot of usable beach space particularly during high tides and really limit everyone's ability to also use the beach. A couple chairs and one beach umbrella have always been sufficient for us.

    Just my opinion.
  • Think I can still wear my hat? It's got a wide brim.
And WE do need to find out if the CGs we use are inside the MB city limits, Horry County hasn't yet passed such a law

Honestly. the only times we ever used a tent was when the Grand Babies were babies, and we had a small dome baby tent to lay them in. I bet you can still use one of those.
  • Yep and the life guards make a big issue about them and being able to see. If you are at one of the big three and have never seen it, it's a phenomenon to watch early in the morning. Golf carts and wagons heading to beach at daybreak so people can stake their claim of 10x10 piece of sand. Lol
  • So. You can still use a personal umbrella in North MB. Not in MB.
Y'all do know exactly why don't you, The real reason?
It's all about money. Myrtle beach RENTS beach umbrellas, and chairs. You bring your own. You don't rent theirs
