wife and i used to own a 1 bedroom condo mainland side of intercoastal waterway at sunset beach nc. 5 minutes from calabash. we loved it. nice and quiet but close enough to everything.
X3 on this. Unless you plan on having a small business like a gift shop, bike rental or who knows what in your retirement I would go outside the Myrtle Beach area a few miles. As stated, South Port is quite nice and you can catch the ferry from there to the Carolina Beach area too. We found a nice little campground 20 miles outside of Myrtle and love it because it is out of the CRAZY stuff in town.
