And it wasn't just native americans - many early european settlers left names. Times change, and it is no longer considered ok, or desirable, to mark the landscape.
There is a section of cliff walls at Capitol Reef NP where the early mormon settlers left their names. It is cool, it is less cool that modern people did it among the settlers names.
