We are new to RV life ( TT ) and are not familiar with NC campgrounds even though we live in NC. We are on the coast and want to plan a trip to the mountains camping in late July or August.There will be 2 adults, no kids. We would like to be in a open, roomy campground, maybe a state park or national park. Somewhere that is remote enough to enjoy the outdoors, bike rides, hiking, ( fishing would be a nice bonus ). Close enough to a town to go in and shop some, maybe hit a bar on occasion, and go out to eat ( rarely ). A commercial campground would be fine also if it can meet most of the criteria.Since we are in SE NC on the coast the Southern / Central area of Western NC would be most convenient to get to but other areas, maybe even in SC or Tenn could be an option without being a deal breaker. We of course would love full hookups but with the parameters I have stated that may not be possible. We have no genny, except an old noisy one that I hate to use, so power is pretty much a necessity unless it is a very short stay somewhere. Thanks in advance...

We just returned from just west of maggie valley. We stayed at a private RV park. it is nestled in the mountains on the side of a mountain.. very quite but very nice. Full hookups. We have stayed at the same place a couple times we like it so much and the owners are so nice. Look them up on line. Teaberry Hill is the place.. It is very near Fontana lake and near Robbinsville, NC.

Looks nice Tanman. How long of a trip from Jax ? Easy drive ?

River Valley In Cherokee NC is nice, Some sites are bigger than others.

hereOff the beaten path with a mine on site to pan for rubies and sapphires. I found a 200 caret grey sapphire last year. We go in the month of Oct. to watch the leaves change and to pan. Franklin is a very friendly small town that is close to some major towns. You will not be disappointed. Let me know what you think.Sam and Gail

Much depends on what kind of temperatures you want to camp in. IF you want HOT. then the Southern Mountains, Cherokee, Maggie Valley, Chimney Rock is where you want to go. There are several nice CGs around Cherokee. We like Happy Holiday. And Hickory Nut Falls is good near Chimney Rock. Not far out of town. Near Hendersonville. We like Orchard Lake. IF you like cool temps, even in the summer. The NC High Country around Boone, Blowing Rock, Linville, and Granfather Montain is where you want to be. No AC needed. Never hot enough for it. Raccone Holler Is our favorite in that area. But hard to get in. There you can canoe the river, as Zaloo's Canoes is just down the road.We also like Honey Bear, just out of Boone, and there is a KOA out of Boone as well. IF you want to primitive camp, on the BRP, You could try Julian Price Park, they also have canoe rentals on Price Lake. And there is Linville Falls CG also on the BRP. Again. No AC needed. If you want a pool. Toe River CG is a great place. It is near Spruce Pines. As to this bike riding you speak of./ Bike riding in the mountains is NOTHING like bike riding on the coast. No where is it flat. You are either going up, or coming down. Up is much harder. Several of the CGs we go to. You can bike ride to the entrance, but you will need some one to come and drive you back up to your campsite. As for hiking. The Blue Ridge Parkway has hundreds of hiking trails.

Stone Mountain for State Park stay and Campfire Lodging for private CG. Campfire, as mentioned above, has incredible views from the Premium sites. If you camp on them, beware the wind rising from the valley floor, it'll sneak up on you and your awning quickly!

We stayed there last spring, and also rented kayaks from Zaloos.

class v: I couldn't agree more Lake Powatan is simply beautiful, and real close to town for touring. Also your quote by Ben Franklin is the same one I use on my personal email account. People with good taste are just to find!!!

The state parks don't have full hook ups. I believe there is a state park in the mountains that has a few FHU sites. We loved Mama Gertie's in Swannanoa. Check out rvparkreviews.com Probably the single best source for campground info and reviews.

Lake Powatan just south of Asheville, hosted there last year nice park plenty of things to see in the area.

Check out Campfire Lodgings in Asheville. It is small, more adult oriented (no playgrd) & close to grocery store,restaurants. The view is superb. Premium sites really offer premium views. It is pricey but worth the experience. You do drive up a curving slope road to reach campground. Motorhomes, travel trailers do fine. Easy to get around Asheville from this location.
