Need Yellowstone Information

We have heard from some friends that Yellowstone has been badly burned by forest fires. If you have been to Yellowstone in the last year or two, can you provide information concerning the condition of the park -- has it overcome the fires or did it even have any? Any information about the forests and sights would be appreciated.

  • No big fires recently and the one from 1988 has much new growth showing. It's at the south end of the park.
  • A lot of the standing dead trees are a result of beetle infestation and not the fires. While the burned area has lots of standing dead trees, it also has thick regeneration coming in.

Either way, it is what it is. Yellowstone is still a great place to enjoy. It is all part of nature. So go and enjoy.
  • The huge, destructive fires were in 1988. Fires occur yearly, and are an essential part of a healthy forest. the odds are almost 100% that there will be fires this year and next year and every year thereafter. There is no fire damage that will impact a visitor and if not for the informational signs many people would never know there was a fire, ever.
  • It was badly burned many years ago, in 1988 -- and you can still see burn damage today. There are tall "snags," dead trees, in many places, and the new growth is not very tall in most places. But that is no reason to stay away, in my opinion.

Were your friends referring to more recent fires??
  • I'd try the official Yellowstone park website. That should have all that kind of info.
