If you're interested in history, there's a neat DE state park at Cape Henlopen, a ferry ride from Cape May. They've got a bunch of WWII artillery & coast defense guns. Another few hours south gets you to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Norfolk is across that, and it's not far to Jamestowne & Yorktown. The Mariners Museum has the remains of the USS Monitor as well as a bunch of other interesting stuff. I found walking on the actual spot where the first settlers walked in Jamestowne to be strangely moving.
