We love to stay at Cochiti Lake COE between Albuquerque and Sante Fe when we visit that area. They have great, level 50 amp and water sites with a ramada and a dump near the entrance. Below is a picture of site 59 on a hill overlooking the lake.

We have spent over a month in New Mexico, and stayed at the KOA in Carlsbad, Really nice CG, great owners and staff. The only negative thing we found is the distance between every town / city. But We will be going back especially for the Balloon Festival. Good Luck and Happy Camping !!

Mountains, fishing, hiking - Red River, Eagle Nest

By the middle of October, the higher elevations like Eagle Nest, Red River, etc. will be getting cool and at least some of the commercial RV Parks will be ready to close for the season.

I am not aware of any trout streams around Cochiti Lake, unless you go Northeast of Santa Fe to the Pecos area.

Taos will still be having moderate weather and there are a number of fishing opportunities on the Rio Grande and its tributaries in the area.

Another area that would be good then is the Gila National Forest, north of Silver City. You have the Gila River (several forks) and Lake Roberts. If you hike, you can get to more fishing in the higher country. The days would be perfect and the nights crisp.

Cochiti Lake has become very popular before during and after the balloon fiesta which is the first full week in October. The site pictured above is in the Buffalo Grove Loop which has 16 water and electric sites. It is often full so reservations would be a good idea. The other electric and water sites in that area are in the Juno Loop. The sites on the outside of the loop do not have water, the water spigots are all on the other side of the road (the inside of the loop). This is not mentioned on the recreation.gov website. The sites in the Juno Loop are gravel not paved. Many of the picnic tables are not covered and the ground is much less manicured.

There is another campground on the South/East side of the Lake in the Tetilla Flats area that also has electric and water sites. It like Juno is older and more rustic than the Buffalo Grove Loop.
