New Orleans

We spent 2 weeks at Christmas time last year at the Joint Reserve Base RV park. NOLA! So much to do! And the food! Don't forget the pralines! For $3 you can buy a day pass for the trolleys & buses. Some of the friendliest folks on earth are in NOLA!
In the mood for a drive? Go out the river & see the plantations. Beautiful scenery.
We did a tour of St Louis Cemetery with the Cemetery Society. They are volunteers whose organization is working toward the upkeep of the cemeteries. Great info. Well worth the fee. You can also check out the Old Train Station when you are near the cemeteries. (The French Qtr RV Resort is right here also. We checked it out - nice, but over our budget.)
Make sure you check out the French Mkt. Local artists along with typical touristy stuff.

I got taken by the shoes trick many years ago on Bourbon Street the first time we went to NO. I paid off because I believe a bet is a bet and if you lose you pay up. If you're afraid of "street folk" this is NOT the place for you. I love NO and we're going back because we all had a great time; I can live without the 5 bucks I lost on the bet.

I LOVE NOLA and go as often as I can talk DH into going. I can definite recommend eating at Mother's Restaurant. It is an absolutely fabulous little place and the food can't be beat. It's a block or two behind the convention center and easy to find and it's not in the quarter, but in the business district.

We go downtown often when we are there, but stick to the main areas, Jackson Square and thereabouts. Don't go wandering off into the Quarter after 6 or 7 pm when all the tourists are still out.

New Years should be a pretty exciting time to be there.

We stayed at Ponchartrain Landing twice this year and enjoyed it both times. They have a shuttle that goes downtown three times a day. You can stay for as little as four hours or as much as twelve. We enjoyed the outdoor marketplace as well as the downtown area. Food is a bit cheaper off the main streets, but it's all good. We never felt threatened or uncomfortable either time we were there. Two things we found out about people from NOLA. One: They know how to party and Two: They are the friendliest people in this country. Learn to say Naw'Lins and y'all and y'all will have a great time.

Don't miss the World War II Museum in New Orleans. We also liked Mulate's Restaurant. Live music and great cajun food!
Not sure about New Year's Eve downtown. I don't think I would do that unless you have reservations somewhere. Also be careful about fights at any sporting event, not just New Orleans. Lots of drunks. I'm glad we went to the French Quarter to say we've been, but no plans to go back at night. Pretty raunchy. We knew ahead of time it would be that way so we weren't shocked. Love the city and there are so many wonderful things about New Orleans. Don't be worried about the route to the campground. Once you get there it's awesome. Wish we had reserved a site on the water. Their super sites are great! Road going to campground is rough so go slow.

If you are the partying type than Bourbon Street with all of it's bars and clubs will appeal to you. My wife and I don't enjoy that but we have found a lot to do in New Orleans.

The french quarter, the garden district, riding the St.Charles Street streetcar and enjoying the great food are at the top of our list. We have taken several walking tours and really enjoyed them. Check out activities on Trip Adviser and decide what looks like fun.

As long as you are street smart and watch were you are late at night, crime should not be an issue. It is a unique city!

It's a fun city with lots to see and do during the day. We felt safe when
we were there by daylight. At dark thirty, it is definatley "Party Time".

Yep, stayed there last year. The CG will provide the shuttle and anwer any questions you have. Just stick to the main drag, lots of people felt pretty safe. We also left as it was getting dark. We did see a couple of drunks fighting, but that was the extent of it.

it is like any other major city. It does have it's bad spots, but it is pretty easy to tell the difference. The CG can tell you more of where to go and where to stay away from. I live right outside of the city. It does get a bad rap. There is really alot to do here. And yes,, they do know how to party ! Saints games are always a good bet. You wil enjoy.. Bill

After the Saints won the Super Bowl - some folks on other forums I visit said that New Orleans would likely erupt into riots, shootings and looting as the 'people' celebrated the win.

I had to disagree.

One thing they do know how to do well in NOLA is throw a party !!!!
