New Orleans

We're leaving on the 20th from VA heading south to Florida for Christmas then off to New Orleans by the 28th. We're staying at Poncharttain Landing RV resort while in NO. We have tickets to the Saints Bucs game on the 29th then plans are to spend New Years downtown.

Just wondering if anyone has stayed there? Spent time downtown? This will be our first time in NO and we're wondering what we should expect? Been reading a lot about how bad the crime is and unsafe it can be just a block off the "main drag".

Any words of wisdom would help.
  • I have always felt if someone is looking for trouble you usually find it. In New Orleans it is not hard to find it, either. Stay together as a group in well lit areas, and act responsibly and there should not be any problems. Have a good time and be safe.
  • Also, Stay away from the "Shoe" scam..lol
The person will say "I bet you (X) dollars I can tell you where you got your shoes." If you accept the bet he will tell you "you got your shoes on your feet" and then you owe money. If you deny the first bet then the shoe shiner will say "I bet I can not only tell you where you got your shoes but what street you got them on." If you accept the bet this time the shoe shiner will now tell you " you got your shoes on your feet and the street you got them on is (current street)." Now you owe money. If you deny both betting attempts you have just saved yourself some money or a nasty confrontation. :S
  • http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/North_America/United_States_of_America/Louisiana/New_Orleans-793014/Warnings_or_Dangers-New_Orleans-TG-C-1.html It is worth a read. We were there a month ago and didn't stay after dark! Just way to much going on near the the tourist areas. Your CG has a shuttle and they should also be able to help you stay safe.
