Birding is awesome in southern Arizona and southern Texas. They come up from Mexico in the winter. You won't be without birds. :)
Although there are birds at the Salton Sea it's really not a very pleasant area and stinks quite often.
You've ruled out bugs so give Arizona a try. The sun almost every day does wonders for the soul! :)
