I love the US side of Niagara and it is the one for the day trip - the Canada side is "the" trip and worthy of several days. There is a jet boat ride on the way to Niagara on the Lake town. That town is worth a whole day but doesn't need to take that long. Very fun area. When you compare the clean and manicured Canada side to the US side - you may be amazed.
We also stay at 4 mile creek. Both sides are worthwhile. The CA side is certainly more of a tourist trap. Lots of bright lights etc., however there was not a lot of substance there. On the CA side there is the falls and attractions directly related to it that are decent, but all the other bright light attractions remind me of a mall or boardwalk and are nothing special or unique.
Crossing the border into CA may be worthwhile for attractions outside of the immediate falls area. But for seeing the falls area I prefer to stay on the US side and walk across
