Back when, I used to transfer funds both ways. Ca-Us, Us-Ca. The most cost effective way was to purchase( exchange) funds on the spot market through a bank trader. In trades between Cdn. -Us banks 4 figures or more, commissions were much less than a % on the dollar. Open a bank account in the country you are visiting, transfer expected cost funds into a local bank.
