Hmmmm .... I understand that you cannot take dogs on the ground (even when on a lease) on trails in many federal parks ... but can you take them by carrying them?
(We have a small dog and a special pet backpack for it whenever we want to hike on trails with it not having to walk on the ground for whatever reason.)
This is the quote from RMNP regarding pets, and I've seen variations at other NP sites:
"Pets may accompany you in developed areas such as campgrounds, parking areas and picnic sites but are not permitted on trails or away from roads or parking."
Note the "not permitted on trails or away from roads or parking". It goes on to say that, WHERE PERMITTED, the pet must be on a 6 foot leash. Those 2 sentences would indicate that pets are not allowed on trails under ANY circumstances. Where they ARE allowed, they must be on a leash.
If there's any question on this, I would suggest calling the National Park, for clarification, prior to making your reservations.
