Northwest/Canada Trip

I'm planning a Northwest/Canada trip next summer to include:

Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Glacier and Banff.

Would appreciate RV park and route recommendations. Already reserved Fishing Bridge campground in Yellowstone for a week. Any other spots I should travel to while in the area? What are your favorite things to see? It's just me and my DW. Thanks for your help.
  • I would stop at Mount Rushmore if you haven't seen it. We stayed at the Mount Rushmore KOA in Black Hills.
If you go through Denver, check construction. It was awful. We stayed north of Ft Collins at the KOA Fort Collins-Lakeside. Expensive park but very nice!
For The Tetons we stayed in Riverton WY at the Wind River RV Park. Not fancy, but a short drive to the Tetons.
Stop in Cody WY and visit the Buffalo Bill museum. Several campgrounds in town. Check them out on www.rvparkreviews.com. We stayed outside of town at the Yellowstone Valley Inn and drove to Yellowstone from there. Since you're staying at Fishing Bridge no need to do that. There is also a state park near the Buffalo Bill reservoir.
For Glacier National Park, we love Glacier Meadow RV Park in Essex MT. Short drive to both East Glacier and and a bit longer drive to the West Glacier entrances. Water and electric and pump twice weekly for tanks included in price. Go visit The Isaak Walton Inn in Essex.
We moved to Kalispell for a couple nights and drove (dirt road) to Polebridge MT to the old Mercantile and got Huckleberry bear claws!! Yum!!
We went up Hwy 2 into Canada. Few questions entry into Canada, no biggies. We check their website to find out what was allowed.
Tunnel Mountain in Banff. Or we stayed at Mt Kidd RV Park in Kananaskis and drove to Banff and Lake Louise.
When we returned we came down Hwy 93 through Kootenay National Park. Beautiful drive. Entered into Idaho. More questions coming into US than going into CA.
    I want to go again!!
  • You are going to some of our most treasured spots that we have been fortunate to visit several times.

Let us know what type of parks you are looking for and your interests and that will narrow down things for us to focus on.

Good point made by joe b. about the Glacier Parks; let us know on that.

I will be glad to add on here or you can also PM or email me.
  • Spend some time on the Icefields Parkway, which runs from Banff north to Jasper NP, with Yoho NP in the middle, slightly to the west. Over the years Yoho has become our favorite of the three national parks, operated by Parks Canada. It is more laid back and less crowded, IMHO.
The town of Radium Hot Springs is well worth a few days camping. There are both private and government campgrounds in the immediate area. The govt one on the hill overlooking town has full hookups. A part of Kootenay NP I believe.

As you are no doubt aware there are two parks in the area with basically the same names, the Waterton Glacier NP which is a shared park of the US and Canada and the Canadian Glacier NP located west of Lake Louise. That entire area of Alberta and BC could be made into a park, as the scenery is just outstanding. I believe much of the area is Crown Land so not sure how they decided where to draw the park boundaries. A week in the area is nice, two or three weeks would be outstanding.
