OBX Cape Hatteras KOA in late June?

We live two hours away from the OBX and make a dozen or so trips each year usually staying at the NPS Frisco campground. Others have addressed the wind and mosquito question so I'll throw out a few suggestions for activities.

Manteo - Lost Colony Outdoor Play, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, NC Aquarium, Queen Elizabeth II sailing vessel and waterfornt docks.

Nags Head - Wright Brothers Memorial and Jockey's Ridge State Park/

Central - Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, check for programs at NPS visitor center

Southern - Ferry from Hatteras to Ocracoke, Ocracoke ponies, Ocracoke Village

i wouldn't be too concerned with the skeeters. now the NPS is another matter as they are both gung ho and rude. btw don't plan on driving on the beach either unless you want to part with $120. i would recommend a visit to wrightsville/carolina beach instead where your vacations $$$ is appreciated.

Do folks suggest bringing in the awning at night as well?

Seekingsummits ... don't fret! It's not that bad - just keep an eye on the weather. Yes, it is windy most the time, but the wind is what makes the beach cool and bug free. Just like anyplace else - keep an eye on the weather, and if something is coming, retrack the awning, and secure the blowables ....

Thanks. We just got our Passport 3220BH this past fall so havent really even used the awning all that much. Its an electric one so I think we do need to keep a little better eye on it than the manual ones that seem to be stronger.

seekingsummits....I work for Keihin we have a new corporate office (renting space in Fishers) with mfg sites in Muncie and Greenfield, I am down in NC at a site. They just got a new Headquater site and will be moving to Anderson, IN (Flagship Enterprise Building).

OBX is a great place to camp. Myrtle Beach is great also. They are very different so it depends on what you are looking for in each trip.

I might be simple, or maybe just lucky, but I stay at the RV Park next door to the KOA and I never notice the bugs. Maybe the sea breeze kept them away. And the sea breeze was what made it fun for the kids that wanted to fly kites. Just monitor the weather and be alert if a front comes through because that's when the breeze changes to WIND. LOL. We were on the beach last year when came through, and just like that, umbrellas and sun shades went flying. But, no matter, you can't beat an OBX vacation!

Hey Jayco, I have heard of those guys. I live in Fishers but am from Anderson so I heard they were moving there not too long ago. Small world.

I don't remember what storm it was but the campground got pretty tore up in a hurricane a few years ago-they have been doing a great job of rebuilding. We spent a week there last year, it was great. The pool is awesome; you can sit on the deck under the canopy and have "refreshments" while your kids enjoy the (small) water slides. There is a zero entrance side for the little ones.
You can reserve a site with a small shelter so you don't even have to pull out your awning. Like others have commented-the bugs come and go depending on wind currents (I'd worry more about jellies).
A trip to Jeannette’s pier, 16 mm-Whale Bone Junction, would be recommended.
