OBX, NC - Rt. 12

We are leaving Thursday for the Outter Banks. Will be staying in Rodanthe (KOA).

Was wondering how Rt. 12 was between Nags Head and Rodanthe.

Last year there was a lot of work on the road, Oregon Inlet Bridge and a very narrow temperary bridge.

All advice is appreciated.

  • We were there in April.

You will find essentially the same conditions you found last year. The Oregon Inlet bridge work was minimal, while we were there - one lane closed for a short distance. The temporary bridge is still temporary. There is some additional road work in that area as they have started on the new construction. (They hadn't started on a new bridge, but had paved the approaches to it.

  • Agree with Pulsar. Was there last week and those are the conditions I found.
  • Thanks

I was hoping the temp. bridge was replaced - I was on the bridge last year, going south, when a class A, going north, desided to play chicken. He did back up and all was good.

  • I posted this question last year.

So here goes again - I checked "NCDOT" and did not see any warnings.

Passing through May 30 - Nags Head to Rodanthe.

Thanks for any info - Good or Bad

  • There now. No change. Occasional single lane/short distance on the Oregon Inlet bridge. Temp steel plate bridge still in use and probably will be next year as well. All kinds of traffic navigates it daily so it shouldn't be an issue for you.
