One month in Colorado

We've stayed at Lake City - a very small town as is Pagosa Springs. They were fine for us as we enjoy Jeeping and fly fishing.

We've stayed at South Fork but not much for our interests there. It's the smallest of the surrounding towns.

Durango or Ouray have more stores to choose from and even a movie theater if you're staying long-term.

Our first choice of all of them is Silverton - another small authenic western town in a gorgeous setting with awesome 4-wheeling.

It just depends what kind of activities you enjoy and if you really need shopping nearby.

Has anyone ever stayed in Lake City, Colorado?

Check out Priest Gulch Campground near Dolores. I have never been there, but we met some folks who just raved about it -- right on the river, very quiet, good location. If you book a whole month, maybe they will give you the option to pick the best campsite!

Ouray and environs

Southern Colorado has an abundance of great locations, activities & RV parks. Most folks find that there is so much to do in the surrounding mountains, trails, lakes & rivers, that they spend very little time in the campground.
If you want to spend the month in one location, your first task is to choose from the 2 general areas of Durango/Silverton/Ouray vs Pagosa/South Fork/Creede . They both have nearby mountains, trails, lakes, rivers; but with minor differences in amount of people, tourism, & activities.
I stay in South Fork all summer, but take frequent short term trips to Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Pagosa, Gunnison, Buena Vista and Taylor Park; and enjoy them all for different activities and atmospheres. No shortage of good camp sites in all locations, but some do fill up early with long term occupants.

Fun Valley is the one that come's to mind if you're looking for places where there are lots of organized activities. But there's so much to do in SW Colorado, you may find plenty to do on your own. In fact, you might be better off picking a couple of places for two weeks each, as it would mean a lot of long days if you're wanting to see much of SW CO. Many of the roads are high speed, often with speed limits well below 55. For instance it's a minimum four hour drive one way from Fun Valley to Ouray, at that's assuming you don't stop for pictures or get stuck in slow traffic (very common with lots of RV's and semi's on these roads).

If you feel you must stay at only one CG for the month, I'd look at something around Durango, as it's somewhat centrally located. Durango also has more stores etc. than some of the smaller towns in the area. If you're there for a month, you should be able to meet others in the CG who maybe would like to join you in sightseeing in the area.

Alpen Rose is good if you want to be in Durango. We used to live in CO and just got back from yet another Fall trip there. I would also suggest Ouray - or Buena Vista. Email or PM me if you would like.

We also liked Alpen Rose. Close to a lot of things to do.

You might check out Alpen Rose RV just north of Durango, CO. Lots to do in the area especially if you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle...or take a day trip to Silverton and rent one. You won't be sorry.

Every summer we go to Fun Valley Family RV Resort for 2 1/2 - 3 weeks. But it is more south central CO just west of South Fork toward Wolf Creek Pass, a few miles from the continental divide. It is in the mountains.

An older very large and busy RV park along the South Fork of the Rio Grande. A lot of people spend the season (late May to mid Sept) year after year. A lot of them do things together. But I don't know that they organize group outings. The park does have regular golf outings, horse back riding, stocked trout ponds, miniature golf, tubing in the river, C&W dancing 3 nts/wk, other entertainment, restaurant, groceries, large laundry, etc. Easy day trips to Pagosa Springs, Creede, Great Sand Dunes, Cumbres & Toltec steam railroad, etc.

A place that many people love, and some don't, as you can tell by reading rvparkreviews.com.

To be in the mountains check out these areas. We were out there four years ago and while we stayed in the state park north of Ouray the area is beautiful. Below are a list of campgrounds for the cities indicated. This will help with your research for Ouray, Silverton, and Durango.
