We go down every year right after Christmas. We have found the following route to be fast, no large hills, less truck traffic, and a pleasant drive. We go to Tampa from SE Michigan.
I96 to I69 at Lansing,MI
I69 to I65 at Indianapolis,IN
I65 to US231 at Montgomery,AL
US231 to US84 at Dothan,AL
US84 to US19 at Thomasville,GA
US19 to US98 just south of Homosassa,FL
US98 to Suncoast Parkway (FL589)(toll road) into Tampa
We usually take three nights to get there.
We overnight in campgrounds at Columbus Woods and Waters campground just S of Indianapolis the first night. They have the water turned off but have a nice clean restroom/shower facility that is heated and open. They are also a GS campground if you are a member.
Point Mallard Campground in Decatur AL the 2nd night.(just South of the Tenn state line) Also gives GS discount if I remember correctly.
SugarMill Plantation RV Park in Thomasville,GA the third night. (where US84 runs into US19 )
This gets us into Tampa in early afternoon on the 4th day.
An option is to continue on US231 at Dothan,AL to I10 and take that across Florida.
