Friends and I did it on the motorbikes 2009 and loved it but wasn't RVing back then so can't really say anything concerning the RV lots.

But for us it was well worth the trip.

is the beach accessible from the campground walking?

Looking at the pictures the place looks very much like a resort, are they misleading?

Yes it was in 2012, I would expect it still be the same. Don't recall it being so large though. The sitemap makes it look a little bit on the large size...

I looked at the map and suspected that myself, as being on the water I imagine the sites are stacked on top of each other.

Maps says the shortest route from Acushnet to Hatteras is 706 miles, and 12 hours drive time. And you plan to do it in one day? I think you are not going to like the trip much. Even if you have two drivers, that's a LONG haul. Counting driver's potty stops and fuel stops, you are looking at a minimum of 14 to 16 hours on the road.

My money says you will only attempt such a journey once, and I'll bet you break up the return trip over at least two days, and three would be better.

ive done bush gardens VA in one shot before, with a lesser vehicle, not that my new truck is faster, just hoping it tows easier.

Also my wife will do some drive time, believe me we know it isn't a great way to do the trip.

The campground is like a parking lot with the sites very small and close spaced.
Check out Camp Hatteras. Sites are well spaced with the choice of either sound side or ocean side sites, all within easy walking to the beach.

Just curious what is it about camp hatteras that you liked better than KOA, I know someone already mentioned the sites at KOA were small.
I have a 39' triple slide 5th wheel should I be concerned it wont fit?

The KOA is really large, and looks like the parking area of a drive-in movie. No trees, lots of sand and gravel, and sites very close together. Beach access is good, but can be a pretty good hike if your site is near the back, or front depending on how you look at it :) . The KOA and Camp Hatteras are very similar with respect to sites and spacing.

We stayed at Ocean Waves where the sites are also close, but there are trees and grass and altogether a more pleasant RV park. It's a little harder to get to the beach as you don't have a boardwalk to use. And it usually fills up really fast, and stays full.

You won't have any trouble with a large 5th wheel at any of the RV parks.
