I forgot to mention when I posted earlier that I've evolved a simple method of passing through areas like the one you're "just overnighting" in.
When just traveling from point a-to-b, I organize my schedule so that most of my driving time is at NIGHT, when there's no place to sleep free/cheap. Then, when dawn starts breaking, I head for the nearest day use area, park, and get some z's.
No muss, fuss, or trouble from the authorities, and since six to eight hours of sleep is all I need, there's a lot of the day left when I wake up at noon-to-one o'clock.
This actually works really well if you're just traveling, or even just want to spend a few hours poking around a particular area..
