Overnight near Ogalla / North Platte, NE

Hey folks, we are heading to Colorado Springs in Aug. First time in CO!!!! We need a one night "overnight" stop, which happens to be a Saturday night. Thing is, I fell in love with Lake Ogalla SRA park, but they require 2 night minimum stay. I could just pay the extra 18 bucks, but wanted to know if any of you all know of an overnight location in the North Platte or Ogall area?

Appreciate input.

  • This might work in North Platte, the Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park and Camping; never stopped there, but driven by on US 83; nice looking campground by the river.

Some years ago, when traveling on I-80 in Nebraska Westbound to Denver. We did an overnight at a rest area with visitor information. Somewhat large area. Can't remember exactly were. As I remember it was not far from the I-76 split off to Denver.

Nebraska RestArea: Camping is prohibited. Maximum length of stay permitted is ten (10) hours.
(So an overnight without setting up like camping should be OK.)

We were in a C-Class when we did our overnight.

Milepost 132.55 Ogallala Rest Area Westbound*
Located 4 miles east of Ogallala. Contains 13.2 acres with parking for 7 trucks and 26 cars. The area has 8 picnic tables, children’s play area, and a summer tourist information station. (Seems smaller that what I remember on Google Maps)

    Milepost 159.94
    Sutherland Rest Area Westbound
Located 3 miles east of Sutherland. Contains 11.4 acres with parking for 7 trucks and 26 cars. The area has 6 picnic shelters, 2 picnic tables, children’s play area, and a summer tourist information station.

    Milepost 159.60
    Sutherland Rest Area Eastbound
Located 2 miles east of Sutherland. Contains 16.2 acres with parking for 7 trucks and 26 cars. The area has 10 picnic tables, children’s play area, and a summer tourist information station. This is the historical site of the original Oregon Trail. The trail is still visible and preserved at this site. (Part of O’Fallons Bluff. Listed in National Register of Historic Places.)

:S We stayed at one off I-76 (not 80). There is one at Exit 125 by Sterling, Colorado. Has a lot of parking areas, separated well. DOT RestAreas CO ::::::: Ditto

There is a Welcome Center at Julesburg, CO. I believe this was the one we stay the overnight. It has seperate parking area...even more like I remember. It is at Exit 180 from I-76.

Officially There is no overnight parking or camping allowed in Colorado's rest areas.
OverNights at CO RestAreas :::::: Ditto

Maybe 6 hours stay? But I'm pretty sure we stayed a little longer. Seems I asked at the Visitor Center. But maybe not. Been too long. May have been someone working outside, if there was a Walmart in town & they said people overnight at the rest stop. ?

There is a Walmart Supercenter - that does allow overnighting. In Sterling, CO.
    1510 West Main - 970-522-0600

Might have been in Sterling where we did our stay at the rest stop. ???
  • Last year I stayed the night in a Travel Plaza right off of Hwy. 80 going East, If I remember correctly the exit was Newberry Road, There were several motorhomes parked there.

    Bob in Calif.
  • Campground at Big Springs NE. On frontage road on south side of I80. Truck stop on the northside. Nothing fancy, but a good overnight stop.
